| I joined the US Navy in December of 1972, the same year I graduated high school in Fruitland, Idaho. After boot camp and training on the operation and repairing of the SQS 35 IVDS Sonar, I flew to Athens, Greece to meet my ship, the USS Manley DD-940. The Manley was home ported in Athens (Elefsina) as part of Destroyer Squadron Twelve, under the command of NATO. I left the Manley in 1975 and returned to San Diego. I entered A-1 school for submarine sonar operation and repair. (I had volunteered for sub duty after experiencing many disappointments in the surface navy's inability to detect and kill submarines during our war games.) In July of 1976, I met my wife to be, Cathlyn and joined ship's company of the USS Billfish SSN-676, a fast attack nuclear submarine. I loved sub duty and the duties of a sonar man, but I hated being away from the love of my life. After completing six and one-half years in the navy, I was honorably discharged in 1979, and I went to college at the University of Southern California, Fight On! I graduated in 1982 with a BA in Economics and an unofficial minor in English. I am married to my lovely wife, Cathlyn, and have three sons, Nathan, Kurtis, and Garrett. I'm a blessed man. |
